Have you ever woken up and felt that something was amiss? You can’t put your finger on what exactly is wrong, you just know something is missing in your life. Have you ever thought about who you are and where are you going? These kinds of thoughts are usually to do with the fact that you are not satisfied with your life.

When it comes to altering things around in your life you might have very little specifically to go on. Some people are great at having a fixed goal like losing weight or quitting smoking, but for many unfocused people it’s difficult for them to focus on any specific goal and so get overwhelmed with details. It is important to take stock of yourself and understand what is going on in your life and what you have to change.

The benefit of personal development is that it can support the positive aspect of you and let the negative part of you whither away. Personal Development, in general, helps you maintain a more harmonious disposition. Your emotional processes, values, beliefs and everything you hold dear are interconnected. When you hold a holistic approach to yourself it will improve your being as a whole. Personal development is the key to establishing important and fulfilling relationships.

There is much to be gained from personal development other than the physical goal itself. There are many people who become disgruntled because they have not quite reached the level of personality they want to be at. The thing is that the feeling of disappointment is the first stage of self-awareness. The fact is it is self-awareness that forms the bedrock of personal development.

Self-awareness is when you start to understand how you work on a mental and physical level. Understanding yourself is when you can take action to correct the defects that you have spotted. Basically it’s a voyage of self discovery. When you have returned from the voyage you are wiser and more confident in yourself. Self-awareness is great for revealing what you can accomplish in your life.

Only a few people truly understand the significance of self-awareness. The important thing to remember is that once you have developed it to a high level you can plan the way you challenge your goals more successfully. It is about mastering growth and development. Self-awareness gives you the ability to master your surroundings to the best of your capability.

It is not easy gaining positive personal development through self-awareness because it is not always easy to take a good honest inventory of yourself as you may not like what you see. The fact is that by taking a good long hard look at yourself is what you need to do if you want to change any negative aspect of yourself. You need to see what needs to be changed. Without the skill of self-awareness you will never be that different person you wish to be. Always remember self-awareness is part and parcel of personal development. You cannot have personal development without self-awareness. So don’t hesitate take an inventory of yourself and be the confident and positive person you deserve to be!

Economic conventional wisdom suggest that there is not enough resources in our universe for everyone to survive and thrive. Think again. Through self development, you can have abundance and prosperity.

Many people believe that the world supply of goods are lacking in regard to supplying this world with all of our needs and wants. That the the only way to have enough for everyone is to take from others for one self.

Through personal development you can have all of your needs taken care of, and your heart desires full-filled.

The conventional economic guru theory of why we will not have enough supplies for generations to come is supported by the thought that the universal supply of goods, finally will run out and that there will not be enough goods to support us. This theory is debunked in my view, because God would not made [and continues to create] these billion of humans, without adequate supplies for them.

The bottom line with regard to one having a lacking mentality is simply found in the dearth of one’s own self improvement. As we improve our minds with regard to having unlimited thinking, the possibilities become unlimited.

There are two main reasons that we, will never be short of abundance and prosperity in this world, as long as we allow ourselves to personal develop.

Here are the two main reasons why we will always have abundance and prosperity in this world.

Number one: as man continue to develop his intellect, he will discover better methods for producing goods in this in this world. An example of this is found in the history in this country [USA] with regard to whale oil and coal being our chief supply for transportation. These commodities were used to power the ships and to light lamps and candles. The pessimist would often lament how we will run out of these two commodities, and then we will be doomed. But the discovery of petroleum oil [This was done through man's personal development of his mind] supplanted the need for whale oil and coal as our main commodity for powering our engines.

The number two reason that man will always have abundance and prosperity, is tied in closely with the first reason that lack is unacceptable, and that is technology will assure us that we look for better ways of producing goods. So as we develop our inner selves with the use of technology,new horizons are born.

So in summation, if we will realize that we are children of God. And that we are made to have unlimited thinking, which produces technology, which produces new and better methods for acquiring goods. This is all bore out through personal growth.

One goal that everyone strives for (or should strive for) is personal development. Personal development books are an excellent way to meet and exceed this admirable goal. Personal development books allow an individual to get ideas as to how to personally develop. They also are a fantastic jumping off point in any personal development plan. Let’s take a look at some of the best personal development books on the market.

One of the best personal development books is “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams” by Deepak Chopra. In “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” Dr. Chopra discusses the seven Vedic principles of a purposeful life and applies these concepts to everyday modern living. This is a must-read book for anyone seeking a more fulfilling life path.

Among the important personal development books, one also finds the “Tao Te Ching” by Lao Tsu. This ancient Chinese book of wisdom was written over two thousand years ago. It takes the form of eighty-one short chapters, with each chapter encapsulating a veritable pearl of wisdom. It is not meant to be read cover to cover, but instead to be digested in small bites over time. As an example, one chapter simply reads “What is a good man? A teacher of bad men. What is a bad man? A good man’s charge.” Simply enchanting.

No list of personal development books can be complete without mention of “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran. The book takes the form of a novel in which a prophet waits in an unnamed for a ship to carry him back to his homeland after many years of exile. As he awaits, the people of the town gather to wish him well. The prophet, in return, shares his wisdom with them on life, love death and more. It is a book of both poetry and power and the wisdom contained therein cannot help but set an individual in motion toward meeting his or her own personal development goals.

As can be seen by these few examples, personal development books vary greatly both in style and content. The one constant among them is their ability to inspire, give insight and enhance the spiritual journey of everyone who reads them. The ability of a reader to communicate one on one with a powerful thinker, as well as take those thoughts to heart, cannot be underestimated. Personal development books are among the most important tools any individual can carry along the road to their own enlightenment.

All of these varied desires for improvement are based upon the very human need for increased security against the chaos of the day to day world. When I work closely with my personal development clients, I provide them with what I describe as ‘mental exercises’ – short ‘meditations’ that enable them un-clutter and focus their minds. You must realize that a focused mind is the secret to living a happy and successful life. However, some of my clients are a little coy about how they practice their ‘mindfulness’. One in particular told me that he couldn’t even bring himself to tell his nearest and dearest that he was meditating. So, he would lock himself in the toilet to do his exercises – Heaven knows what his wife thought he was at! Now, I do understand that personal development is just that ‘ personal. But what I don’t understand is how anybody would feel ashamed about their efforts to better their lives. After all,, in doing so, they might even better the lives of those who mean most to them.

Perhaps it’s time for personal development to become inter-personal, for like-minded people to actually stand up and be counted for who they want to become – leaders in their own personal lives and a real and positive influence in the lives of all those that they claim to love. Our world needs this positive action because, as things stand, we are faced with an historic dis-empowerment of ordinary people who are simply trying to make the most that they can of their ordinary lives. I’ve just glanced through the latest news on Europe-wide protests against the austerity measures being introduced by European governments to ensure that the markets’ faith is restored in sovereign debt and the euro. But ‘the markets’ are run by the financiers who created the burden on sovereign debt in the first place.

For example, Ireland’s sovereign debt market standing is tarnished to say the least – the market demands that it pays practically three times the interest rate on its debt that Germany is paying. Ireland’s sovereign debt is burdened by the State’s rescue of Anglo-Irish Bank – a bank, according to Ireland’s Finance Minister, that is of no intrinsic worth but is systemically important because of its size. In exactly the same way that the world’s financial power-brokers huddled up with the political masters, so Ireland’s financial elite were given unprecedented free rein to create a beast of such magnitude that it has ruined Ireland’s financial standing internationally, rocked the European Union and dented the value of the euro on international markets. The Anglo-Irish Bank story is one with international ramifications – but it’s one of many such stories. Royal Bank of Scotland, Lehman Brothers and a whole plethora of US banks. And the banks that are now thriving, often supported by taxpayers’ hard-earned money, have stopped lending to small business and are, to quote at least one regaultory authority, ‘fleecing’ ordinary bank customers with outrageous charges and penal interest rates.

Now, a quick question. Which has had a greater day-to-day affect on the ordinary lives or ordinary people, 9/11 or the economic crisis? With 23m people unemployed in Europe, with double-digit unemployment in the US, Osama Bin-Laden need not have bothered. The real terrorists are wearing Hugo Boss suits and these guys are still manipulating the levers of power. And just like all terrorists, these guys are fundamentalists – driven by a deeply held belief and love. But it’s not love of God that’s the driving force here but a deep and abiding love of large sums of money – your money, my money.

Now, you may well ask, what has all this got to do with self improvement or personal development? Well, it was Gandhi who said that if you want to change anything that you have to be the change. And it was that same little man, who spun the material for his own clothes, who pulled the rug out from under a super-power that once ruled one third of the world. It was Martin Luther King who had a dream that was, perhaps, fulfilled in Barack Obama’s election to the Whitehouse – a victory driven by small donations from large numbers of people who believed the slogan “Yes We Can”. It remains to be seen if Obama’s election actually represents real change – but that’s because it took place in the context of a political system that doesn’t care about all those grassroots people. And, looking beyond the US, who would have believed that, during the Soviet era, a shipyard worker from Gdansk could set in motion the domino effect that spelt the demise of such a mighty and powerful bloc? A quarter of a century ago who would have ever even considered that South Africa might be ruled by the majority of its people?

Ordinary normal people in Europe and the US are, just like my friend, cowering on the seats of their toilets, praying for change in their own lives, too ashamed to stand up and be counted collectively as the people who really matter. Personal development and self help books make up a constantly growing major sector of the book market – yet all their readers are closet converts. Sure, you can change your own life for the better – you can be unemployed but happier, you can be up to your eyes in debt and on lower wages, but full of the joys of life. But, as I say to my clients, if you don’t have concrete results to show for your personal development (and that is not a pun on the concrete mixer that was driven through the front gates of Ireland’s parliament!), you’re fooling yourself. And, at present, it strikes me that there are just too many fools around.

Personal development is about making a difference – firstly in your own persona life but then, also, in the lives of others. Personal development, or self improvement, is not about keeping your mindfulnees or focus all to yourself. Don’t forget, you’re meant to love your neighbour as yourself – that means, firstly, you and then them. Yes, personal development or self improvement is all about making your own life better – and the lives of others too. Your own efforts at personal development need to be ‘inter-personal’. And when it becomes a force for change in its own right, we may well witness a real and holy war on terror.
